Ideu zátiší ve fotografii dokumentuje Siegertova sbírka, shromažďovaná od počátku sedmdesátých let 20. století a dnes jedna z nejvýznamnějších na světě, půldruhou stovkou snímků vybraných do této publikace, jež obsáhly více než stopadesátileté období. Kromě proslulých fotografií kniha obsahuje i řadu snímků dosud málo známých - vedle klasických námětů květin, potravin a uměleckoprůmyslových předmětů představuje početné "nálezy", mezi nimiž nechybějí ani surreální a abstraktní kompozice. The Siegert Collection was begun in the early 1970s and is today one of the most important in the world. The book's editors selected 150 photographs spanning a period of more than a century and a half in order to document the idea of still life in photography throughout history. In addition to famous photographs, the book also contains numerous lesser-known images - not just classical motifs of flowers, food, and design objects, but also several true "discoveries," including surreal and abstract compositions.
